Starting a Web Project

We’ve noticed that web technology has progressed immensely within the past few years. The progression comes from an increased performance of mobile devices, tablets and computers as well as an evolved and improved experience from surfing the web. These changes have led us to be more aware of technology management and to fine-tune the way these tools are used.

There are a countless amount of tools built for content creating, publishing, programming and presenting at our disposal. But, which one to pick and why?

Build with a reason in mind

Before starting any research for a template or a platform that will meet any desires your interactive project may have - either for a website, application and etc. - you will need to take into consideration that the chosen software alone might not meet all of your objectives. All time, effort and money invested should clearly meet the project’s objectives, if not they will simply be an expense.

Creating a clear mission for your project is crucial. It can be a clear objective such as “how to improve my company’s digital presence”, as long as the objective fully established. For example: if your mission is “Grow my company’s success”, you will need to break down your mission into something more specific such as “to develop my company’s presence with the public” or “Attract a customer base at (enter region here)”

Once your objective is clearly stated, it will be time to go over all possible tools and options that will help complete your objective.

Choosing the web

Among all options at your disposal, there are many that are web-related such as, creating a database, promoting, campaigning and more. In many cases, building a web-based project is a no-brainer. The production price is quite low considering the results it can generate, as it can allow a company to meet a targeted clientele, generate more from their investments, sell products internationally and support their regular customers.

In addition, there are many other interesting benefits about the web that isn’t instantly recognized but remain important nonetheless such as, the web allows you to establish your brand, inventory or company in real-time. It will allow you to establish a conversation with the customer and to listen to their needs. It can also allow you to independently update information and options at your customer’s disposal.

You should also understand that one of the most important factors to building a web-based project is your own time and effort required in the project. This isn’t the case for all project types, but when it is, building and taking care of your project is most likely the best investment that can be done while creating it. For example, taking care of a community can be profitable, but it must be well managed. In contrast, building an application that is constantly used and admired is a great accomplishment, but staying relevant in the world of applications is a huge challenge.

If the project is, for example: a website, you will need to understand how autonomous you will have to be when it comes to editing the pages. You might not be able to edit all aspects of the website, such as the colours and/or layout of a button, however, you must be capable of keeping your product and its information updated.

INVESTING IN A TOOL

This leads us to consider the real questions that must be asked to those who will accompany us in the construction of the web project, if this is the case. Your first concern is how you will be able to feed this tool. Be careful, this is not about taking control of the entire project structure, but rather about how you will be able to tame your tool and use the features available to you. It is important to understand that you need to master the functions that will be in your hands before you think about multiplying them. The functionality of the tool must be discussed on both sides: what features will be offered to the user and which will be offered to the administrator. Do not believe at this point that the size of your control is crucial, but rather where it is.

If it's a website project for a company, for example, you need to understand how much you'll be able to do with editing content pages. Maybe you will not be able to control all aspects of the site, such as the color of the elements or their layout, but it is important that you are able to update the product information in this case.

Responsibilities

In the creating and/or building process of your project, make sure that the designated responsibilities that a person may have are clear and well understood by all. Production times most often get delayed due to communication problems. Communication problems lead to responsibilities bring misunderstood, which means work will be completed past deadlines.

The power of trust!

Lastly, keep in mind one main rule when working on a web project: trust must be tight between all co-workers. You should trust your intuition in this project, such as the decisions you will take once you know what information will go where, but you should also trust what any expert will have to say at the same level of trust.

Indeed, any web project will require help from many technical experts such as designers, developers, programmers and/or information architects, as well as many other experts such as marketing experts, content creating or referencing. Everyone is responsible for establishing a work environment that will allow every individual to maximize their contributions and help others on doing the same.
